“Steel Blossom” is a giant stainless flower growing from Roanoke industrial past to blossom into the city present and future as it’s still growing. In the petals you find scenes inspired by Roanoke’s history. I’ve never been in Roanoke but I enjoy researching on the internet to collect all kind of stories. I sketch vignettes of what catch my attention. Then the storytelling begins, it can unfold with my own themes. Sometimes a library recall images of winged thoughts, bookworms and butterflies. Other times the Rockwell painting at the Taubman museum suggest an escape or Oscar Micheaux filming Jazz invites a soundtrack by Louis Amstrong. As daydreaming the mind wanders and elaborates different scenarios. For sure the story get better and better with time, opening new windows into our imaginations.

I invite you to “read” the different scenes you recognize in this flower. Through your experiences and interpretations. from facts to fantasies, feel free to make all kind of stories: crazy ones, funny ones and weird ones. Share them and listen to other people’s stories and what comes out from the same images. I believe all these stories combined reinforce our sense of identity and belonging to a community. This is the magic of transmission. Maybe next time you look at the blossom it will already be something else.
